When should I install my eSIM?

Last reviewed 13 Oct 2026Checked against Apple Support

Installing an eSIM and starting its validity are not always the same moment. Each package page shows a Validity starts line. After you buy, your order page shows the same rule.

Validity starts when the eSIM first connects

The package page says: When the eSIM first connects to a network in a covered destination.

  • You can install it at home before you travel. Wi-Fi is the easiest way.
  • Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in one of the package's countries.

Validity starts when you install

The package page says: When you install the eSIM.

  • The clock starts as soon as you install it.
  • Install shortly before your trip, not weeks ahead.

Start not specified

If the package page says Start not specified, contact us before you install so you don't start the validity too early.

Install before the deadline

Each package page shows how long you have to install the eSIM after you buy it. Your order page then shows the date. Install before that date: after it, the installation details are no longer shown on the order page.

Good to know

  • You need an internet connection to install. Wi-Fi or another connection is fine.
  • Don't delete the eSIM from your phone once it's installed. Some eSIMs can be installed only once. Contact us before deleting.
